  • What makes you nervous?

Answering online questions makes me nervous. You never know how someone will interpret the response.

  • Describe something you learned in high school.

I learned how to type and it has become one of my most used skills. I have been a writer most of my adult life so typing is invaluable to me.

  • What book could you read over and over again?

I’ve read Shepherd of the Hills by Harold Bell Wright every year since 1969. It is my all-time favorite book. I have several editions of the book, including a first edition signed by the author in 1907.

  • Which aspects do you think makes a person unique?

Science tells us a person’s fingerprint, DNA, or walk. But I think it is more on a spiritual plane. Our soul makes us who we are. It is at the heart of our personality, desire to love, and willingness to live.

  • If you could have something named after you, what would it be?

A son or grandson. I have 4 daughters and 9 granddaughters…no sons or grandsons. But, I do have 4 incredible sons-in-law.

  • What makes you laugh?

Myself! I’m the biggest goof I know.

  • What’s something most people don’t understand?

A lot of folks don’t clearly understand that simple faith comes from knowing God, trusting God, and obeying God. That’s the simple pattern of faith found in most of the heroes of faith from Hebrews 11. They either came to know God initially, or grew in their knowledge of God. This led them to trust God as He gave them purpose. Then they acted on that purpose in obedience. Not perfect obedience, but intentional.

The same can be true for us today. As we come to know, trust and obey God.

  • What do you wish you could do more every day?

Write! I love writing but have other commitments that compete with my time.

  • What activities do you lose yourself in?

I spend a lot of time writing.

  • Write a letter to your 100-year-old self.

    Dear 100-Year-Old Dave,

If this letter somehow finds its way into your hands, I hope you’re sitting in a comfortable chair with a warm cup of coffee nearby and a heart that is still grateful for the journey.

I hope you are still smiling at simple things—sunrises, quiet mornings, and the laughter of family. I hope the years have deepened your faith and softened your heart. If life has taught you anything by now, it is that the things that mattered most were never the things that could be bought or stored away. They were the people you loved, the hope you shared, and the faith you tried to live each day.

I hope you remember the adventures—roads traveled, stories told, and the many ways God showed His faithfulness along the way. If your steps are slower now, may your spirit still be strong. If your memory fades at times, may the most important truths remain clear: God was good, life was a gift, and love was always worth giving.

If you could send a message back through time, I imagine you would say something simple:

“Trust God more. Worry less. Love people well. And don’t rush the journey.”

Until we meet in those later years, I will keep walking forward with hope.

With gratitude for the life we’re living,

    Dave
